If you are not allowed to use the elevator, or if you live in a villa and have no elevator, you will need to rent a ladder truck (사다리차, 사다리車, sadaricha). These are specialty trucks with an extendable ladder, much like you’d find on a fire truck, and a remote controlled platform to move items between an outside moving truck and a residence multiple stories up. If your move requires one of these, the size of the ladder truck will be determined by the height and you will pay twice; for moving out of your old residence and once again for moving into your new home. If your home is on too high of a floor, you will be unable to use a ladder truck due to safety reasons and must use an elevator. For more information on elevators in Korea, please see the elevator page.
Ladder trucks are parked next to the moving truck so items can easily be moved from the truck to the moving platform and up to your new residence. Locations to set up these trucks are limited and sometimes cars are parked where the trucks need to access. This is one of several reasons why people leave their phone number viewable in the front window of their car; so they can be contacted by the movers if need be.
Items are shuffled from the platform into the home after first removing a window or two and laying down a blanket to protect from scratches. In the image below, note that a blanket has only been placed at the right side of the window, as only that spot directly accesses the platform. The left section of the window was also removed as some items were rather long, and it was safest to remove both right and left window sections.
While the above image was taken from a secondary bedroom, the image below was taken from the master bedroom. It is also normal for living room windows to be removed. Which windows are used as the access point is determined by the parking location best available to the movers. It is easy to remove windows as they are lifted up and then pulled inside but please don't try to help the movers remove window sections as double pane windows are quite heavy. Chances are you'll be tired from moving, so you don't want to make a mistake a drop one by mistake.
