Getting to the IBS Headquarters from within Daejeon
You can reach the Institute for Basic Sciences (IBS) Headquarters from within Daejeon City either by taxi or via public transportation.
Taxi
- Taxis are widely available throughout the city and are generally easy to catch, except very early in the morning, late at night, or when it is raining. We recommend hailing a taxi on a main street. Cash, debit/credit cards, and transportation cards (T-money, Cashbee) are all accepted payment options, however, some taxis may not be able to process credit cards from foreign banks. Regular taxis in Daejeon are typically silver, white, or orange; black taxis offer a premium service and have a higher starting rate.
- Call taxi services (Korean language only) are available for requesting a taxi at a KRW 1,000 surcharge, which is added to the total fare at the end of your trip.
- To avoid any potential confusion with the taxi driver, we recommend saying ‘Hello’ in Korean when getting into the taxi (Ann-young-ha-say-oh) and then showing the following note in Korean:
- 기사님, 과학로에 있는 한국기초과학지원연구원 말고 유성구 엑스포로 55 기초과학연구원으로 가주세요.
- [English translation: : “Driver, please take me to the Institute for Basic Science located at 55, Expo-ro, Yuseonggu.”]
- Taxis usually stop at the main gate of the IBS Headquarters.

Driver, please take me to the Institute for Basic Science located at 55, Expo-ro, Yuseonggu.
Bus
There are multiple local buses that you can take to get to the IBS Headquarters. Buses 121, 705, and 911 all stop relatively close to the IBS, but, depending on your starting point, you may need to transfer from another bus. To find the best bus route for whichever location you are setting out from, use one of the search engines listed below.
- Google (map.google.com)
- Google maps displays information in English and Korean, with other language options being available. However, please note that the information is not accurate or up to date compared to that of major Korean search engines.
- Daum (map.daum.net)
- The Daum website is only available in Korean; however, the app (Kakao Maps) is partially bilingual and contains accurate and up-to-date information.
- Naver (map.naver.com)
- The Naver website is only available in Korean; however, the app (Naver Map Navigation) offers maps in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. When downloaded, it will automatically switch to your phone’s default language. Driving instructions in English are also available. Both the website and the app provide accurate and up-to-date information.
You can use cash or transportation cards (T-money, Cashbee) to pay for bus fares, but please note that some buses no longer accept cash payments. When using a transportation card, transfers between buses and between a bus and the subway are free and starting fares are slightly lower.
Subway
- The closest subway station, Government Complex Station (정부청사 Jeongbu Cheongsa), is located 3 km from the IBS Headquarters. Therefore, we do not recommend taking the subway, unless you are planning to transfer to a bus or taxi. If you do opt to use the subway, get off at Government Complex Station (정부청사 Jeongbu Cheongsa), take Exit 3, and transfer to a bus or taxi.
- To avoid any potential confusion with the taxi driver, we recommend saying ‘Hello’ in Korean when getting into the taxi (Ann-young-ha-say-oh) and then showing the following note in Korean:
