Title: Probing electron captures in supernovae through charge-exchange reactions.
Abstract:
Core-collapse supernovae are amongst the most energetic phenomena in the universe. They contribute to nucleosynthesis, stimulate galactic chemical evolution, and are the birthplaces of neutron stars and black holes. Supernovae are also multi messengers – they emit light, neutrinos, and gravitational waves that can be used to obtain information about their cataclysmic demise and their role in the universe. Understanding the evolution of core-collapse supernovae requires knowledge of many different subfields and to make progress experts in different disciplines work closely together to make accurate models with reliable inputs. One important ingredient is the accurate description of electron-captures on nuclei in the core of the collapsing star. To make reliable studies of how these electron captures affect the collapse phase, one needs theoretical models for the electron-capture rates that are tested and improved based on experimental data, and those rates must be included in astrophysical simulations that take into consideration such micro-physics. This presentation will focus on a collaborative effort between astrophysicists and nuclear theorists and experimentalists to address all these aspects in a coherent manner. This effort has resulted in an electron-capture rate library that can be used for core-collapse supernovae simulations, as well as other astrophysical phenomena in which electron-captures play important roles.
