Studies of Superconductivity and Novel Materials at High Pressure
Viktor Struzhkin
Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution for Science, Washington DC, USA
I will discuss resent high-pressure studies of superconductors and novel topological materials. The techniques required in the laboratory and at the synchrotron facilities to perform high-pressure studies of transport properties, structure and magnetic properties will be presented. Recent examples of our research, such as metal hydrides and superhydrides, charge density wave states in superconductors, and pressure-induced topological insulating states will be covered during the talk. For example, recent theoretical predictions of stable phases of higher hydrides (polyhydrides) pose new constraints related to their stability at the conditions of high pressure from few GPa to more than 300 GPa. We performed synthesis of hydrides of metals at high P-T conditions. Our use of pure hydrogen-metal chemistry favors creation of new hydrides and also provides insights into new chemistry at high pressure.
