Exploring 2-dimensional 3d-5d interaction with x-ray resonant scattering and spectroscopy

    Jong-Woo Kim

 Argonne National Laboratory

We employ digital doping of SrIrO3(SIO) layers with La2/3Sr1/3MnO3(LSMO) to tune the interlayer coupling of IrO6 octahedra, leading to changes in electronic and magnetic properties. Nominally, SIO develops antiferromagnetism on the verge of metal-insulator transition by lowing to 2-D structure, whereas LSMO is ferromagnetic with itinerant character from double exchange interaction. In LSMO/SIO superlattice structure, we observe that net ferromagnetic Ir moments contain mostly orbital component, aligned antiparallel to the net Mn spins by using element-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements . X-ray resonant magnetic scattering shows 2-D antiferromagnetic ordering occurs similar to Sr2IrO4 independent of the Ir ferromagnetism from interfacial magnetism. The branching ratio of XMCD probes the induced ferromagnetism shows mostly characteristics of Jeff = 3/2. The result demonstrate the magnetic interactions between 3d and 5d take place through particular spin-orbit state. This finding will provide an insight to understand emergent phenomena from spin-orbit entangled 3d-5d oxide layer interfaces in superlattice films such as topological Hall effect.
