Job title

Post-doctoral Research Associates, Experimental Condensed Matter Physics

Overview

The Center for Artificial Low Dimensional Electronic Systems (CALDES) of Institute of Basic Science (IBS) in Korea invites applications for a post-doctoral research associate. The successful applicant will conduct research on low dimensional electronic systems through the atomic level understanding of low dimensional materials and heterostructure. The CALDES, led by Prof. Han Woong Yeom, is a collaborative nanoscience research center belonging to IBS, a newly established national research institute to lead the top notch basic science research of Korea.

Description

The successful candidate will be expected to perform active research on the low dimensional electronic systems (examples includes, but not restricted to atomic wires and layers, single crystals, thin films, nanostructures, and so on) that demonstrate novel physics phenomena with future technological applications. This position is geared towards the multi-functional probing of low dimensional materials using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) technique with emphasis on structural, electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties. Experience in a subset of the following disciplines is highly desirable: scanning probe microscopy and other surface analytical techniques, ultra-high vacuum and cryogenics, and programming in CAD, Origin, and LabVIEW.

Qualifications

- Ph. D. in condensed matter physics or closely related field, must have completed all degree requirements before starting their appointment
- Demonstrated experience with scanning probe microscopy research in nanoscale and mesoscopic structures
- Strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
- Motivated and safety conscious while possessing excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and conduct interdisciplinary research with colleagues from different academic backgrounds

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Experimental research in ultra-high vacuum low-temperature STM for characterization, data analysis, and interpretation
- Responsible for presenting research results and publishing scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
- Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
- Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Appointment Period and Salary

The initial appointment is a temporary full-time assignment not to exceed two years, which could be extended once up to five years in total. Starting salary ranges between $ 40,000 and $50,000 per year.

How to apply

Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names of at least three references to Jung Wha Lee (aja@ibs.re.kr) at CALDES of IBS.  Questions regarding the position can be sent directly to Dr. Jewook Park (jewookpark@ibs.re.kr). Review of application will begin immediately and will remain open until the position is filled.
